Roy’s Sunday Letter for October 6, 2024

** Great appreciation for the personal comments about “who makes up your Village for support, communications, and encouragement.” People shared that their Village members knew of the importance of staying in contact and how to best do that. So, one outcome of the Sunday Letter is the awareness that strengthening our person-to-person networks makes us all stronger, more resilient and healthier.

  • As we have all watched the ongoing video and stories of Hurricane Helene, smaller, more detailed reports from Florida, South & North Carolina, now public. I had not considered prisons, zoos, pet boarding, diversity of wildlife, postal service, livestock fencing and feed, retreat centers for art and personal growth. In western N. Carolina there was a video of great contrasts… the old-style mule trains and modern helicopters bringing supplies to residents of cut-off communities. It is nice to know that both exist in today’s world.

** The CEO of Amazon, as of January, will require all full-tine employees to work in-office for a five-day work week. Employee resistance is strong. There may be legal challenges regarding employees’ rights in their workplace.

In my current Florida coast fiction read, an experienced 18 yr. old surfer says: “The secret to surfing is to be centered when the waves come.” And, with life, waves do come to us all.

  • Netflix Recommendation: “This Is Us” 2016 – 2022 originally ABC series. Intergenerational, multiple families, evolving storylines, excellent award-winning scripts and character portrayals all in one show. If you watch you will be challenged, frustrated, and marveled by the individuals and families of each episode.

Here are 3 affirming recognitions to close this Sunday Letter:

I am Grateful for the 8+ Monarch Butterflies, and all the smaller butterflies who visit, feed, and beautify our front garden. Beth planted and nurtured the right short, tall, and colorful blossoms for the last two seasons. Many of us have Renewed Energy as the Southwest weather slowly shifts from 100+ to low 90’s and next week mid-80’s. I am a Cheerleader for school and public Librarians who daily educate and nurture learning in a political culture that may prefer limiting learning rather than exposure to new ideas, thinking, and effective ways of understanding each other.

Roy, appreciating butterflies, mule trains, and being outdoors

I was so sad when “ This is Us” ended. It was such a wonderful, emotional, and truthful look at the workings of a family. I too was amazed at the mules and horses. Sometimes the old ways are the best. So much devastation and heartache and not enough help. It is difficult to watch; watching butterflies is so much better.

Despair and hope live within us
      Side by side
Not allowing one to dominate or push aside the other
      Faith fits in there somewhere
Your giving self fits in there too

Thank you, Roy. I don’t comment often, bit I read weekly and appreciate the insights and encouragement shared. I am glad you are a newer member of my village.

      Quiet villagers
      Leaders among the nosier members
      Holding hands, facing outward
      Together

we watched every episode of This is Us and fell in love with all the various characters and the struggles they faced in life primarily because of the death of the patriarch. Such a well-written and superbly acted piece of television history.

WE stumbled over the show on Netflick.
Several seasons still to go. All good.
Best to you and your Village

Men who are prostate cancer survivors spoke during our church service today of their experiences. They are now part of another village and family.
