Roy’s Sunday Letter for October 9, 2022
Can a 2012 movie Inspire? Be Charming? Show us Hope? Yes. A British curmudgeon husband, a cancer-stricken wife, a community choir of elders. Trust me that Inspire, Charming, and Hope are still true. Terence Stamp, Vanessa Redgrave. A meaningful script and story line. HBO On Demand is one source for Unfinished Song. Tell me if you agree....
** I have a conversative good friend. Mike has helped me create a 20/80 listening approach. Whatever the mission, cause or organization, sometimes the facts to consider may involve using donated funds for personal gain (houses, planes), or a founding member filing suit over being exited. That's the 20% I accept as true and real. I challenge Mike, and myself, to focus on the "making a real difference" significance of the 80%. Tis good and right to have Mike at the table, with good spirit and humor too.
- Say What? News reports this week on identified cheating in Irish Dance Contests?? An old style, not online or digital, trading of sex for higher judges scores. Not sure I needed to know this one.
** A North Carolina mystery Fiction writer, Ellery Adams, gives these words to a small-town bookstore owner: "This building is filled with books, that once opened, the pages will force you to grapple with the hardest truths of your life. After reducing you to a puddle of tears, they will raise you to your feet again. The words on the pages will pull you up, higher and higher, until you feel the sun on your face again." My hope as a writer is for my short stories to grab you, shake you, and then offer the reward of seeing individuals and families over-come challenges, make it through a hard time or tragedy, to indeed feel the sun on their faces, and the faces around them, in the best of ways.
- "If you are still breathing, go do something good for someone else." Maya Angeleo.
** I have posted a short Blog titled, The Where, Why, & How Of Work 2023. Traditional offices, 8 to 5 hours, favorite lunch places, and what to do with the kids on a snow day have all shifted, never to return in the same way. Covid 2020 has impacted each of us, changed us, and the society in which we live and work. Find the new blog under Stories & Blogs at royswritings.com.
- My book signing of Let Me Tell You A Story will be on Sunday, October 16, 2 to 4 pm, at the Lazy Daisy Coffee Bar. Slow mail invitations have been sent to DFW area friends and readers. A younger friend told me, "I've never been to a book signing." It is good to be reminded how something in my elder experience can be new and exciting to someone else.
Roy, feeling the warm sun on my face
My 80% rule is 2 eyes, 2 ears, one mouth=80%
Say what! Who are You going to believe? Me or your lie
ing eyes?
John, I found the cheating of Irish Fulk Dancing of past times. Most cheating today (ie 19 yr old international chess champion) is online. Some of us still just do what we say…..you are one of the good ones ….. Roy
Good Sunday letter…the unfinished song I sing is to use my energy helping people… I do not have to have a credential to obtain that dream. I receive more than I give. Beautiful movie I think Redgrave is timeless. Thank you!
Beth
And, our song, well established, is unfinished…..we walk toward that finishing together.
I’m still breathing. Still focusing on doing good. Love you so much.
it is an honor and privilege to be that Mike at your table Roy.. more listening, more doing, less talking.. the more we listen the more we discover we have in common with folks not always like us.. I accept your 80% challenge and am grateful for it.. keep on writing Roy.. thanks much.. md
