Roy’s Sunday Letter for May 31, 2026
Meeting Beth & Turning Calendar to 82
Remembering the last Sunday in May, 1977. My life was blessed by meeting Beth at St. Francis Presbyterian, a Ft. Worth house church. Our life together began that Sunday and has continued for 49 years, through 4 cities, 5 dogs, and 5 homes. From our commitment to learn about each other, we learned about ourselves. We continue to do so by paying attention, being present and creating healthy social circles. We believe we are striving seniors who want to strengthen our gifts and abilities for the tomorrows to come.
Our life today continues to be influenced by our Faith and has been important to our participation in a weekly Meditation group. Learning to meditate has enriched us both with appreciation for Buddhist teachings. We talk through the small and the large parts of daily life. We trust each other, leaning into each other’s strengths and wisdom. We are settled, for now, in our Ft. Worth home and neighborhood. We will be ready for our next steps as they may come.
- The calendar pages are showing me a new number at 82. At this life stage, I have completed my service with nonprofit community organizations. My investment today continues as a writer, teller of stories, being an encourager and being present with others. I hope to always continue to support those who struggle with life decisions and the suffering of declining health. I always want to encourage good feelings, and a sense of hope. A major shift in my life today is sharing challenges, decisions, and next steps with Beth, always the better of the two.
- Daily living is slower, the calendar less crowded. I am learning about being still, strengthening my legs, balance, and breath. Connections with our social circle, whether near or far, is a protection against the elder tendency to isolate. Each evening, we share one part of our day for which we are grateful. I am, we are grateful, with heart felt appreciation for health, financial stability, and the friends who care about, as we care about their lives and family.
Roy, missing Jazz, who gave us all the love and life she had to give.
Congratulations on 49 years together! You have had good times, bad times, challenging times ,but each time of your lives together, strengthened your resolve to work it out together. You and Beth have a unique relationship, you work as equal partners and cherish each other and the many friends that have moved in and out of your lives, together. 82 is just a number, your mind is sharp and your compassion for others is strong. Happy Birthday, dear friend, here’s to many more
Good morning Roy, thanks for the letter.. Happy birthday and very happy anniversary.. living a well lived life.. although at a slower speed, still at full speed ahead.
There is talk of us having role models growing up, that help shape who we are. not too much said about inheriting a role model much later in life. My life was greatly enriched, just a few years ago, when Betty introduced us over lunch at the hamburger joint on Arkansas Lane in Arlington. I owe Betty many things and y’all are at top of the list. Thank you for leading by example. Big hugs Roy and Beth.
Good morning and happy birthday Roy!! Thank you for sharing your beautiful life and sharp mind with us every week. I love that through all the years you have continually found ways to serve and encourage others. You are a true blessing on this earth! Big hugs to you and Beth!
