Roy’ Sunday Letter For Nov. 20, 2022
- Medical/Roy: No one was more surprised than me when at 6AM Friday I began a morning of vomiting, 10 more times before noon. At 11:30 a brief visit to Urgent Care, then on to ER for assessment, IV, more. 12:15 to 5:00. No book, no food, no water all day. After the initial assessment I asked the RN about timing of the IV. The well trained, gracious RN replied, “There are 2 RN’s for 27 patients so I really can’t give you a time,” My years at John Peter Smith taught me a medical truth: “There is your time and then there is hospital time!” On Saturday AM low energy, calm stomach. Beth was the caring, steady, patient partner…none better.
** Something I did not know: There are 90 high schools with bar-b-que teams. Pass the sauce please!
- Research tells us house plants grow best with soft, pleasing music, and less so with loud, jarring music. So, what if we placed a house plant in all US House and Senate offices? Plant cam will show us the impact of negative blaming, shaming, toxic words and tone. Plants surrounded by praise, support and encouragement, building up words and tone, I believe, will show healthy, thriving plants. How about a House and Senate plant “Show and Tell”?
** It is an odd world, no? The same Jeff Bezos who is laying off thousands of Amazon staff, named Dolly Parton for a $100 million Courage and Civility Award. Perhaps Dolly, always a progressive thinker, will create a support fund for the no more Amazon employees.
- Big Picture News: The larger world now totals 8 billion people. Cities are expanding, rural land decreasing…humans created climate crisis…so many of us wish to do good , and many exhibit little interest in acting on ways to live together without violence or harm…then there is the world food supply, decline of honeybees, the education and future role of children…now is the time to make the changes our world needs.
** November is National Foundation Month. There are several IRS designated foundations, including private foundations and community foundations. Our institutions, buildings, and mission causes would not be as developed without these local, national and interntional foundations.,
Lastly this Sunday, a memory will be with me of all waiting in ER to hear our name called. The awareness of several women in their 80’s waiting by themselves in wheelchairs, of young parents and children all wanting their names to be called. Each experienced in the hallways of ER’s of… go here, sit there. and more waiting. Medical staff come and go, weaving around the chairs 24/7. Prayers for all who wait!
Roy, still restoring, regaining the me lost to himself on a Friday
Roy, so sorry to hear of your medical issue. May the healing spirits dance about you.
Scott
the dance may be slow but restoration underway. on 5 minutess my world shifted…..as with us all we ontinue on.
What a scare! Did you find out how to avoid another ER visit? How awful for both of you. Sending healing vibes to you, and maybe some playlists to Congress…
All the healing thoughts being absorbed. Restoration underway….slowly
I observed more than I learned….the medical clock moves slowly
A frail 86 yr old woman admitted she is begging to be admitted….she has no family …. she did not want to be alone on Thanksgiving. Got that
.
Sorry about your recent illness. Very scary to be so sick. Hope you are doing much better now. Enjoyed your plant/music analogy. Would be an interesting experiment.
Thanks for the news,
Martha
slow recovery…..I obsrved much in ER, did no learn much but observed I did. Appreciate heeling words. Each good thought moves me forward……Today 100% rest. No other choice. Thank you in all waoys
Diagnosis? Too liberal?
Richard
always pushing forward, even when going backward
I can be more cautious about new projects…..
Good letter, and full of good ideas! Sorry to hear of your Friday experience. Not fun!
What do we say next, “It was a learning experience.”
I observed much, not sure I learned much
Time moves slowly in ER………and without a book!
Low energy….Cancel our 3 setter against the 24 yr olds please…………
I trust you are on the mend—-wow, that is scary. Sounds like food poisoning? A good news story—just returned from San Bernardino CA to deliver their fourth Courthouse facility dog. The DA told us what an important impact the dogs have on his community—positive feedback. So important.
Love you.
LM
Ywa, critical to someone unkknown for now
right dog, right perosn, right time
My world is better with you nearby….
Oh, my word! I am laughing so hard I’m wheezing! This has to be the funniest post I’ve read in YEARS, and I’m only halfway through it! The way you blithely jump from this very serious medical crisis and IVs to “bar-b-que teams” and on to “House and Senate plant Show and Tell” (I LOVED that part. It’s priceless.” I mean, who could not be laughing hysterically??) I was laughing at just the jump from “Medical Roy” to “bar-b-que teams” in high schools.
Now, I just read the rest of your S, and I have gone from laughing so hard to feeling deeply moved (an equally life-giving emotion). Yes, it IS an odd world, re Amazon and more. And, as to the 8 billion, I remember in my lifetime, the mention of roughly 6 billion. How did we grow so fast, Roy?! I can no longer comprehend our ‘expansion’-without-awareness, I pray and do what I can to help us all remember, awaken, and cherish. I also join in prayers for all those who wait. Yes, so many prayers. Thank you, friend Roy, for that deep caring and awareness of others. And, thank you once again for enriching my days…so fully…with so much humanity. You move through the full spectrum like no one else…your gift to the world…helping us remember our humanity…all of it.
But isn’t that how the world works for all of us? We bounce from event to headline to a friend to event…..onward. Here is a truth I do know. WE BROUNCE TOGETHER; WE ARE CONNECTED.
Still exhausted from Friday. Lean back. A full Monday. Best your way special person………
Yes, you must rest, and take a lot of time for yourself. We will all still be here when you feel fit and recovered. You’ve been through a huge and serious ordeal. You are held in my prayers, and in the prayers of others too. And when you rise again, after a break, you will be stronger than ever. But yes, “lean back.” As Dad used to say to me when I ‘fell,’….”Steady as she goes. Robsy. That is the way to a long life.” Thank you, Roy, very much.
What a week. Be well and take care of yourself!
Hey my friend,
Lately I have been exhausted by the troubles of losing democracy of seeing all that should be done and could be done and so little that is being done however reading your letters kind of brings it all down to a personal level that we can find some comfort and maybe a voice about how our world is going from a very familiar perspective.. it is Native American heritage month and I wish so much that there was more going on to bring that recognition to light there have been several programs on television like The View that promoted that recognition and since we have a Secretary of the Interior from the Native American community for the first time there is a bit of comfort knowing that we have a seat at the table I strongly believe in quote unquote being there you know what I mean.. I think people would be shocked and surprised at how many Native Americans fought in the wars that created success and victory for democracy and the United States.. thank you for your words my friend and I’m wishing you good health…. Rainbird
Always good thoughts
Your words make me accountable
I appreciate your broader and also narrow view greatly……I am paying attention.
Thanks for your words, sorry for your ordeal.
May your healing be complete! Love and prayers for now and always💗 for you both.
So why do my friends want me, tell me to slow down?
OK, they are wiser than my push forward, always showup self…………oK, timee to listen
Maybe this is a sign to slow down – Seems like since your retirement and return to Ft. Worth that you have been trying to prove, to yourself and all, that you still have the vigor and stamina that you had when young, let me assure you that this is not true, as with an old car, our bodies have wear and tear from the years, How do we approach old cars? We do normal maintenance, replace parts when needed and certainly don’t set out on cross country trips without consideration and some trepidation. We know you have had a successful career; you don’t have to prove it. We know you are wise; you don’t have to prove it. We know you still have insights into the world, but remember, the younger crowd that comes along will have their own ideas and need to prove themselves. Relax and enjoy your golden years while you can.
What is different now is 90% of what I am attempting in new, no prir experience to write, publish, blog, more.
yes energy draining…..perhaps a pause would be good for body mine, spirit right now. Thank you for good words….
