Roy’s Sunday Letter for Nov. 13, 2022

  • Election Positives: 1) Young voters, many first-time, made an outcome difference in many races. Gen Z voters had high interest in restoring women’s health rights and climate warming. Younger voters talked of “mission and cause” rather than the “Power & Control” of older voters. 2) Black women continued their long heritage of high turn-out and voting their values. Persons with a variety of life-styles and preferences were elected to serve, including a 25 yr old to Congress. In many ways, a return to “the normal.”

** Luby’s Cafeteria closed. Cafeterias were a mainstay for families, elderly, and singles from 1950 – 1980. The tradition of moving a tray down a food line of limited choices lost its place to drive-thru, take out, expanded fast food menus, along with the pace of life 2022. Do you have a cafeteria memory??? Share…..

  • US families, schools, and workplaces have experienced 22,000+ gun deaths and 314 mass shootings so far in 2022.
  • Strictly enforced gun laws seem to be the key for most nations reporting 6 – 10 mass shootings annually. Regretfully, there are web sites tracking gun deaths by type, nation and year.

**All at once I began receiving 10 -15 spam Comments linked to a blog I published in July. Tim, beloved tech guy, resolved this by requiring name/password to Comment on that blog. I encourage and will respond to all Comments, whether for a Roy The Elder blog or Sunday Letter. The more Comments I receive from Readers, I will know ‘the system” is working.

  • Several readers of the Sunday letter did the “encouragement” writing exercise of listing 15 life events, narrow to 5, narrow to 2. Then, each life event written in less than one page. What would your list of 15 be? Your two? Your first half page?

** Highly Recommend a 2019 Netflix movie, Fantastic Fungi. This magical movie showed the role of mushrooms in the diversity and rebirth of the forest, of the benefit of mushrooms in science and the physical anshift emotional health of us all. Enjoy – Learn.

  • “I come from a neighborhood where we are told, Don’t Talk About It, Be About It.” Autho: Pitbull
  • When younger I sought achievement, buying, building. Later in life I shifted to the higher value of Being. Younger people learn about Being earlier, faster, and apply all the online, mentoring available. Good for the younger!

Roy, Still wanting both Achieving and Being (doesn’t work that way)

Luby’s – a piece of history. I have fond memories of Picadilly; the same long railing with more choices than one could imagine. But, oh, the pies!
After church my Mom (Presbyterian) would say “we’re going to Picadilly, hurry up before the Baptists get there!”

chuckled on the baptist words Prade Magaine, 1941, published it last edition this morning. So many life’s signposts no longer. but you, dear friend, are still before the helm, guiding us safely into calm waters.

Enjoyed SL as always. Good way to start each week with words from a trusted friend. The “encouragement” writing exercise is on my “to do” list-thanks for that great idea.

Every week I read your newsletter, and every time I think, “This is Roy’s best SL yet.” Then the following Sunday, I think, “Wow, THIS SL is is best yet.” Then this Sunday I finally thought, “Okay, now I get it; every single one of Roy’s SLs is top-of-the-line…that is just the way of Roy.” And, there you have it. I love all of the contrasting events, thoughts, and insights. It’s kind of like humanity: complex, varied, joyous, sad, inspiring, interesting, and everything in between. That’s what makes life so interesting. Thank you for encapsulating it all so clearly and with a strong sense of our collective humanity. Robin –

    — PS: I remember Luby’s, I was shocked to see it go. I loved the cafeteria-style serving, the waiting in line, talking with others who also awaited their turn (“Oooh look at that. I heard it is very good. Do you want a slice too?”, and with them reaching in to grab you a plate of pecan pie, and seeing what else they ate, and others telling me what was new, and talking with the serving people, and the fun of choosing, deciding…all of that created a warm sense of community which I adored. I miss that.

Friend Robin….you are one of the reasons I write each Sunday. Encouragement and recognition moves us all forward.
Question: Who and how are you encouraged by??? What is one of the first things you do when “your tank” moves toward empty??
Appluse, applause for you in all ways. Continue on in the best of ways……and, Thank You!

Thank you, Roy. Yes to “reasons.” They are so important. I am definitely encouraged by you….as well as out dear friend, Pi Luna, and Jeanne. When you were not at the last meeting it was SO noticeable, like a huge part of us was missing, like something was not right. It’s like the 4 of us have become a strong unit that deeply inspires me, and renews my purpose and energy. I could listen to you talk for hours. You have a rare combination of good advice/direction…and a strong humanitarian side that is brimming with profound wisdom and compassion.

Also watching how much you have accomplished in such a short time is something I think about every week. It STUNS me and is a reminder of what I also can do. I think about that a LOT.

I think when my tank gets a bit low, which is not too often, I turn to nature. That’s where I find God, and have my spirit recharged. But then…I love what I do so much (writing, inspirational speaking, composing music, and nature photography), and I genuinely love people; they astound me at every turn…so, doing what I love usually keeps my tank from going empty. I also love my time alone, hiking, writing, time out sitting in the quiet desert, etc. The writing especially recharges my soul. Well, my friend, I am sure you know about that. Your writing is ALL soul. We all are so blessed to have you grace our lives…including my own humble life. Thank you, Roy. —- PS: Your blog posts have become my most favorite of all, a part of my life now.
